After 18 Months and 1,100 Social Media Reels, Here’s What Businesses Actually Want

After 18 months and more than 1,100 Social Media Reels, the most important thing we’ve learned is that businesses want a relationship with a social media videographer they can rely on.

They don’t want to search for a new social media videographer or video production company every time they need content. They want someone they know and trust, who understands their business, can be easily scheduled for the next shoot, and makes producing regular content simple.

From that relationship, everything else becomes easier, consistent content, comfortable shoots, faster production and a much smoother process.

Most businesses aren’t looking for complicated video productions. They want a simple and reliable way to produce professional social media content consistently.

While every business is different, the same six requirements come up again and again.

1. Businesses Want a Relationship With Their Social Media Videographer

Businesses don’t want to find a new video production company every time they need content.

This is probably one of the biggest things we’ve learned over the past 18 months.

There is significant value in having the same social media videographer return.

Over time, we get to know the business, the people, the locations and the type of content the client likes.

The client also gets to know us.

That’s particularly important when employees or business owners are appearing on camera.

On the first shoot, having someone arrive with a camera can understandably feel uncomfortable.

By the third or fourth shoot, that relationship is completely different.

People know what to expect. They’re generally more relaxed. Shoots become quicker. And the content often becomes more natural.

It’s one reason we’ve developed ongoing production relationships with organisations including Lumino, Anytime Fitness, Flex Fitness, Auckland Rugby and Auckland Rugby League, as well as real estate agents, mortgage advisers, landscapers, chiropractors and many other businesses.

For many clients, the relationship eventually becomes very simple:

When are we doing the next shoot?

That’s exactly how we think ongoing content production should work.

2. Businesses Want Consistent Social Media Reels Content

The biggest challenge for many businesses isn’t understanding that they need social media content. It’s producing it consistently.

A business might organise a video shoot, receive several great Reels and publish them over the following few weeks.

Then things get busy.

The next shoot doesn’t get organised. A month passes. Social media becomes something everyone knows they should be doing, but nobody has the time to organise.

We’ve seen this repeatedly.

It’s one reason many of our clients have moved towards regular content shoots rather than treating every video as an individual project.

A monthly or regular shoot creates a process.

The date is booked. The business knows what it wants to talk about. We arrive, film several pieces of content and deliver the finished Reels ready for the business to use.

Instead of constantly asking “What are we going to post?”, the business starts building a bank of professional content.

Consistency becomes much easier when content production becomes part of the routine.

3. Businesses Want Transparent Pricing

Businesses want to know exactly what they’re paying and what they’re going to receive.

Traditional video production can involve a lot of moving parts.

Pre-production, filming hours, equipment, editing, revisions, music, additional formats and other production costs can all be quoted separately.

That approach makes sense for larger commercial productions.

But we’ve found businesses producing regular social media content often want something much simpler.

How many Reels am I getting, and how much will it cost?

That’s why we’ve deliberately kept our Social Media Reel pricing straightforward.

Our standard package, for example, is 3 professionally produced Social Media Reels for $550 + GST.

There shouldn’t be a surprise invoice at the end of the job because an edit took slightly longer than expected.

For businesses producing content regularly, predictable costs make budgeting considerably easier.

It also removes friction from the relationship.

The client knows what they’re buying. We know what we’re producing. Everyone can get on with the job.

4. Businesses Want a Competitive Price

Price still matters, particularly when video isn’t a one-off project but something a business wants to produce throughout the year.

That doesn’t necessarily mean businesses are searching for the cheapest person with a camera.

What they’re looking for is value and sustainability.

A large production involving producers, directors, camera operators, sound engineers and multiple crew members may be completely appropriate for a major television commercial or brand campaign.

But that’s not what most businesses need to create regular 20–40 second Social Media Reels.

Our production model is deliberately lean.

Typically, one videographer handles the shoot. We capture several pieces of content during the same session. The same person understands what was filmed and handles the production through to the finished content.

That efficiency helps keep our pricing competitive.

Because ultimately, if producing social media content is prohibitively expensive, businesses simply won’t do it regularly.

The economics need to make sense.

5. Businesses Want Support When Speaking to Camera

One of the biggest concerns we encounter isn’t what the finished Reel will look like. It’s what happens when someone has to stand in front of the camera.

Most of the people we film aren’t professional presenters.

They’re dentists.

Personal trainers.

Real estate agents.

Mortgage advisers.

Business owners.

Tradespeople.

They’re experts at what they do. That doesn’t automatically mean they’re comfortable talking to a camera.

We’ve learned that supporting people on-site is a significant part of producing good social media content.

Sometimes that means doing several takes.

Sometimes we break a long piece into smaller sections.

Sometimes we change the wording because something that looked great on paper doesn’t sound natural when spoken.

Sometimes we simply have a conversation rather than asking someone to deliver a script.

And sometimes the best thing we can do is make everyone laugh and start again.

Our job isn’t to turn clients into professional television presenters.

It’s to help them become comfortable enough that their personality and expertise come through naturally.

Often, people who tell us at the beginning of a shoot that they’re “terrible on camera” are surprised by how good the finished content looks.

That’s part of the production process too.

6. Businesses Want Their Content Quickly

Social media moves quickly, so businesses don’t want to wait weeks for their finished videos.

This has become another consistent expectation.

A business might be promoting an event, launching something new, responding to something happening in its industry or simply trying to maintain its regular posting schedule.

Waiting two or three weeks for an edit can make producing regular content difficult.

That’s why we’ve built fast turnaround into the way Ice Digital Media operates.

For most of our standard Social Media Reel projects, we aim to provide first drafts within 24–48 hours of filming.

We’ve found this helps maintain momentum.

The shoot happens.

The business is thinking about its content.

Then, shortly afterwards, the finished Reels arrive ready to use.

It’s another way of removing friction from the content production process.

What Has 1,100 Social Media Reels Taught Us?

Perhaps the biggest lesson from producing more than 1,100 Reels is that businesses value simplicity.

Most aren’t looking to turn every social media video into a major production.

They want to know:

  • What are we filming?
  • When is the shoot?
  • What will it cost?
  • When will we receive the videos?
  • When should we book the next one?

That’s it.

The easier you can make that process, the easier it becomes for a business to produce content consistently.

And we’ve seen that across completely different industries.

A dentist and a rugby organisation might have very different audiences.

A gym and a mortgage adviser might have completely different messages.

A landscaper and a real estate agent might produce completely different content.

But what they want from the production process is remarkably similar.

Who Should Come Up With the Social Media Reel Ideas?

This is another area where we’ve learned quite a lot.

The best content usually comes from combining the client’s knowledge of their business with our knowledge of video production.

Nobody understands a business’s customers, products, services and current priorities better than the people working inside that business.

Our role is to take that knowledge and help turn it into effective video.

A client might arrive with a simple idea:

“We want to explain this service.”

From there, we can help determine where to film it, how to frame it, how the person should deliver it, what additional footage we need and how to turn it into an engaging short-form video.

We don’t believe businesses necessarily need to hand their entire marketing strategy over to their videographer.

Our approach is much simpler:

You bring the marketing knowledge. We bring the production expertise.

It’s a model that has worked extremely well for the businesses we work with.

Why Ongoing Social Media Content Works

Producing 1,100 Social Media Reels hasn’t taught us that every business needs to post every day.

It hasn’t taught us that every Reel needs to go viral either.

What it has shown us is that businesses want a reliable system for producing good content regularly.

They want a videographer they know.

They want transparent and competitive pricing.

They want help when they’re standing in front of the camera.

They want their content delivered quickly.

And above all, they want the whole process to be easy enough that they’ll actually do it again next month.

After 18 months and more than 1,100 Social Media Reels, that’s probably the simplest way we can describe what businesses actually want.

Not complicated video production.

Consistent, professional content from people they trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should a business produce Social Media Reels?

There isn’t one number that suits every business. For many of our ongoing clients, regular monthly shoots allow several pieces of content to be captured efficiently at the same time and then used throughout the month.

Do I need to know exactly what to say before a Reel shoot?

You should understand the message you want to communicate, but you don’t necessarily need a perfectly written script. We regularly help clients refine their delivery and make content sound more natural during the shoot.

What if I’m uncomfortable speaking on camera?

That’s extremely common. Most people we film aren’t professional presenters. On-site direction, multiple takes and a relaxed filming environment can make a significant difference.

How quickly can Social Media Reels be produced?

For standard Ice Digital Media Social Media Reel projects, we generally aim to provide first drafts within 24–48 hours of filming.

Is ongoing Social Media Reel production cheaper than organising individual videos?

It can be significantly more efficient because multiple pieces of content can be captured during the same shoot. It also reduces the time involved in repeatedly finding suppliers and organising individual productions.
